Case Study - School Values Posters
Growing Our Future
When Darren Lund of Speedy Signs Christchurch Central produced 24 signs for View Hill School, it was with great pride in being involved in something inspirational for the small community.
View Hill is a rural school in North Canterbury. Their tagline, “A Happy Place to Learn Since 1876” conveys the positive atmosphere that has a long history behind it. A quick look at their Facebook page shows their focus on the community, with plenty of sports and activities for the kids, quiz nights and auctions as fundraisers, participation in the local A&P Show and stunning support from the community.
Principal Bu Windsor and her staff spent two years developing their values messaging to get it just right. They then designed posters to illustrate the values that were central to the school’s mission.
Four values categories were decided on: Excellence, Individuality, Respect and Caring. Within each category they developed six different messages. These were posed as questions to the children, to be used as reminders of the values they needed to represent as students of View Hill.
Bu visited Darren’s showroom and spent a considerable amount of time choosing the materials. Darren knew the importance of the job to the small rural school; after they had spent so much time and consideration getting the message right, he wanted to ensure the quality of the print job and materials used was appropriate. Bearing in mind the budgets of rural schools, the posters needed to last.
Together they decided on Palight, printed vinyl on PVC foam board. While Corflute would have been the cheaper option, Palight is superior for longer-lasting projects and it still fit within the budget.
“Although Bu knew that the signs would be inside the classrooms and other parts of the school, she was uncertain as to the exact placement so we opted to have them laminated as well, to protect them from any UV light,” Darren says.
The Excellence posters pose questions to the students such as:
“Have you been a positive role model today?”
“Have you persevered today with something you found difficult?”
“Have you complemented someone else on their excellence today?”
The time and consideration that Bu and her staff put into the process combined with Darren’s attention to detail came together to create signage that will stand the test of time. The students at rural View Hill School will grow amongst positive encouragement that is clearly all around them.
